Time is nearly up for the nomination of candidates in the 2020 Labour Party leadership election, those who have announced their candidacy have until 230pm tomorrow January 13th to get the requisite number of 22 MPs to nominate them (10% of the Parliamentary Labour Party) to then move onto the second round of nominations from Constituency Labour Parties & affiliates. As I predicted in a previous article I wrote about this Labour Party leadership election, both Clive Lewis & Emily Thornberry currently look as if they’re going to possibly come up short with the requisite number of nominations amongst the Parliamentary Labour Party, Thornberry currently has the backing of 10 MPs & Lewis the backing of only 4, I think it would particularly sad for the lefty left of Labour if Lewis isn’t able to continue contesting the Labour Party leadership election as over the past week in various media appearances he’s proven himself to have the x as in x-factor with being combatively articulate to be leader me thinks, however remember back in 2015 Jeremy Corbyn only just got over the line with the required number of nominations in that Labour leadership election & did so with minutes to spare before the nomination of candidates officially closed, so who knows what will happen tomorrow.
Ever since Emily Thornberry announced her candidacy to stand in the 2020 Labour Party leadership election, she’s just seemed to use it as an opportunity to bash & rubbish Jeremy Corbyn for everything he’s done, yeah well Jess Phillips has kind of beaten Emily to the punch on that one as she’s been continuously bashing & kicking Corbyn ever since she was elected to parliament in 2015. I’ve heard some political pundits speculate though Jess might’ve gotten the required number of nominations from parliamentary colleagues to move onto the second round of the Labour Party leadership election her leadership bid is already over as in various mainstream news media interviews she’s shown she’s all bluster not at all construction, yeah Jess is something of a gobshite that’s for damn sure but she’s kind of painting herself as something of an outsider to the rest of the candidates & remember Jeremy Corbyn did likewise in 2015, however I’ll be interested to see if she can gain the required 5% of Constituency Labour Parties (33 CLPs) to nominate her in the second round to get her name on the final leadership ballot put forward to the entire Labour membership considering all the shite she has said about Jeremy Corbyn over the past few years.
I certainly don’t want Jess Philips’s name to be on final leadership ballot even if Jess potentially being elected Labour leader would fuck Carl from Swindon (aka creepy rapey tweet man) off no end, Jess Phillips is a transphobic bigot & I’m a trans woman so definitely not in best interests if she ever comes close to being Labour leader & neither is it in best interests of Labour to also have any candidate proposing Labour becomes the ‘rejoin the EU’ party as that would definitely be committing electoral fucking suicide. Lisa Nandy might smack of being something of a red Tory & I worry just as much if she became Labour leader how much that might affect Labour’s social policy becoming a great deal more conservative, however at least she’s one Labour leadership candidate who’s a MP for a constituency in Northern England & grasps why Labour’s approach on Brexit was disastrous, unfortunately the architect of Labour’s nonsensical bullshit of a policy on Brexit presented to the electorate at GE2019 has nearly treble the nominations from MPs which Nandy or any other Labour leadership candidate has received.
I really hope at the leadership hustings there’ll be over the next couple of months that a Labour Party member gets to challenge Keir Starmer from the floor about having pushed the Labour leadership into supporting a second referendum which fucked things up for Labour in its traditional heartlands or that Keir Starmer has hired Blairite Matt Pound to help run his leadership campaign somebody who has been the head of the Corbynsceptic group Labour First who’ve done nothing other then undermine the Labour leadership over the past few years. More of importance there are still questions surrounding actions Starmer took in defending various police shootings during his tenure as the head of the Crown Prosecution Service, but I doubt anything that pertinent will be permitted to be asked of Starmer during any Labour Party leadership election hustings.
One reason I kind of want Clive Lewis to remain contesting the 2020 Labour Party leadership election is to keep Rebecca Long-Bailey to the lefty left, but one has to ask again where the heck is Rebecca Long-Bailey because despite Unite & Momentum putting their weight behind her being the candidate of the lefty left, the continuity Corbynism candidate, her media profile has so far been negligible in regards to the Labour leadership election, I mean from what I’ve seen she doesn’t even have a campaign website unlike all the other candidates including those who won’t be getting through tomorrow’s first round of nominations, for fucks sake it feels as if her leadership hasn’t even gotten off the staring blocks & its all very worrying & foreboding for any of us redder then red socialists. I didn’t expect Rebecca Long-Bailey’s Labour leadership campaign to catch fire in the same way as there was with Corbynmania during the 2015 Labour leadership election, but it does need some kind of spark because right now there feels to be no razzle-dazzle to her leadership bid what-so-ever to help activists fired up in getting behind Rebecca & carry her onwards to the Labour leadership throne, somebody in her campaign team really ought to be seeing to igniting that spark & do so pronto.
